Safety Specialist

The Safety Specialist plays a critical role in conducting public and state safety visits across a variety of workplaces. The primary responsibilities will include performing comprehensive walk-through inspections of cities, counties, USD’s, and state workplaces, to assess compliance with safety regulations and identifying potential hazards such as machine guarding, electrical risks, and more. The incumbent will prepare detailed reports documenting findings, complete with photographs and recommendations for hazard abatement and safety program enhancements. Most importantly, the safety specialist provides valuable informal training to help employers achieve and maintain safety compliance.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough safety inspections, focusing on regulatory compliance and hazard identification.
  • Prepare detailed reports outlining inspection findings and recommendations.
  • Provide on-site training to assist employers in implementing safety improvements.
  • Handle special assignments, investigations, and other duties as assigned.
  • Attend training sessions, seminars, and conferences to stay updated on technological advancements and regulatory changes.
  • Maintain regular contact with public and state entities, facilitating inspections and delivering training sessions.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years in safety, accident prevention, industrial hygiene, or equivalent experience in the safety field.
  • Valid Kansas driver’s license

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • This position requires the following abilities: Planning, exceptional verbal and communication skills, and establishing and maintaining working relationships with fellow employees, community organizations, and the public. Identify and analyze problems and provide solutions.
  • This position requires a large amount of climbing, bending over, stooping or crawling into small spaces and walking/standing for long periods of time.
