Join us for a practical industrial hygiene overview designed to introduce the recognition and control of workplace hazards that can affect the human body. This session will connect real field conditions to common exposure routes, health effects, and prevention strategies.

Outline:

• Identify common industrial hygiene hazards such as dust, lead, asbestos, silica, welding fumes, noise, temperature extremes, and biological hazards.
• Explain the four main routes of chemical exposure: inhalation, skin contact, ingestion, and injection.
• Recognize how hazards can affect the lungs, nervous system, kidneys, reproductive system, hearing, skin, and overall health.
• Apply basic prevention strategies such as respiratory protection, protective clothing, handwashing, wet methods, hearing protection, water/rest/shade, and biological hazard precautions.

Speaker: Shelly Pizzi, CIH, CSP, CHST | Black & Veatch

Shelly is the Manager of Industrial Hygiene with 27 years of experience, including 26 years with Black & Veatch in Overland Park, Kansas. She holds an MS in Industrial Hygiene and a BS in Occupational Health and Safety, both from the University of Central Missouri. Shelly is a professional member of ASSP, AIHA and active in various ANSI A10 Construction and Demolition standards, including Chair of A10.34 Public Protection.
